A Little Bit About Me

I'm not sure how long this little guy was hanging off my hat.

My name is Kerry and I love to camp. Before 2010, I’d never been camping before. I always wanted to try it but never had anyone to go with. Then this guy comes along, we plan a camping trip, I try to go through a boulder instead of around it, he patches up my elbow with a band-aid, and I fall instantly in love. In love with him and in love with camping. I knew from that point on that I wanted to hike however long and climb however high to get to that perfect quiet, that I would follow him anywhere he goes no matter how many times we think we’re at the top but aren’t quite there yet, that I wanted all my band-aids to be put on by this man and this man alone. We’ve been to a few places so far and I keep wanting to go to more and more. That’s where this blog comes in. I want to help myself remember what we liked and didn’t like about a place, to learn from my mistakes, and maybe even entertain a person or two along the way. I’m not athletic. We are not elitist ultralight backpackers. I’m just a girl who likes to camp and has 28 years of not camping to make up for.

I also really like cats.

I have decided to do a solo NOBO thru-hike of the Appalachian Trail in 2015. Everyone cross your fingers twice.

Update 02/23/15: I’m still not an elitist ultralight backpacker but I may have upgraded to subtly pretentious lightweight backpacker. Preparing for the A.T. for the last two years has made me take a second look at every ounce but comfort is a stubborn luxury that still wins out every once in a while. My trail name is Cyndi Loppers, so keep an eye out in those 2015 A.T. registers!

Knife Edge

Update 11/21/15: Well, it looks like I hiked the A.T. Wow. Didn’t expect that to actually happen. From March 19th to October 6th I made my way from Georgia to Maine. It was everything I hoped it’d be and more. Can’t wait for the next big adventure!

    • Thanks. Yours is equally awesome. I just had a really good idea for a friendship application! Instead of “If you caught a coworker stealing, what would you do?”, it could have questions like:

If we are in a crowded room and you see I’m about to have a panic attack, you

      a) pretend like you don’t notice.
      b) tell me to get over it.
      c) freak out with me.
      d) grab me by the hand and punch everyone in the throat that stands between us and the door.

    • Yay! I’ve seen a couple pictures of cats riding along on top of backpacks. It makes me hopeful that I’ll get my cat fix every now and again on my hike. Thanks!

We used to walk one of our cats on a leash. Then one day I checked the mail while we were out and the sound of the mailbox closing made him go berserk. He looked like a big cartoon ball of violence with an occasional limb sticking out of the dust cloud… except he wasn’t fighting anyone… it was just him. I just stood there blinking at him. Dogs, whatever. Cars, meh. Mailbox, WHAT IS THIS SORCERY?! He broke the leash, ran to the front door, and sat there calmly waiting for me to walk back up the driveway and open the door… like nothing had just happened. And this is why my cats don’t camp. :P
